Dr. Maria Alvarez Amaya

Dr. Maria Alvarez Amaya is Professor of Nursing and holds the Wakefield Professorship in the Health Sciences at the University of Texas at El Paso.

Dr. Amaya is also on the faculty of Environmental Science/Engineering and Chicano Studies. She is a certified women’s health care nurse practitioner, teaches in the Women’s Health Care Nurse Practitioner Program, and continues in clinical practice.
Dr. Amaya has expertise in women’s health care, environmental health, and border health. She has been awarded over 2 million dollars to conduct her research. Dr. Amaya has authored numerous works on environmental and women’s health on the border. The National Institute of Nursing Research and the University of Maryland have recognized her contributions to environmental health nursing on the border. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, Delta Kappa Chapter.

Ms. Patricia M. Juárez is acting as the Project Coordinator. She is bilingual and has experience in community involvement on research and informal education. Her work is oriented to promote active binational community participation on environmental health issues. Ms. Juárez has participed as a consultant for local universities, binational agencies, local foundations and environmental health taskforces.
